I'm Jill Moorhead.

Where I come from

Founder, Big Trek Works | Columbus, Ohio

I run Big Trek Works, a communications strategy practice in Columbus, Ohio. I work as a fractional CMO, writer, editor, and researcher for businesses, firms, and mission-driven organizations that need a plan, the words to carry it, and someone to see it through.

Before Big Trek Works, I spent nearly seven years at Columbus College of Art & Design, the last three as vice president for marketing and communications, where I built the marketing team from one person to six. Before that I spent 13 years in retail: more than a decade as marketing director for The Hills Market, an independent grocer that became the test market for new Ohio food producers, and two years as wholesale marketing director at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, supporting more than 1,600 retailers nationwide. That mix is why I'm at home in a board meeting, a stockroom, and a newsroom.

Who you'll work with

Big Trek Works is me. When a project needs more hands, I bring in people I've worked with for years: researchers, designers, developers, editors, photographers, videographers and video editors, and social and email strategists. You get one point of contact and one plan, and I manage the rest.

Why Big Trek

The name comes from the trail. A long hike takes planning, the right gear, and the willingness to keep going when the map and the ground disagree. That's how I approach the work, and it's why community shows up in every project I take on.

I'm also a journalist.

I write for Columbus Monthly and Ohio Cooperative Living, and my work has run in The Kitchn and Ohio Today and been picked up by Yahoo News and other outlets. That reporting is where the stakeholder-interview habit comes from, and it's why clients get copy that sounds like a person wrote it.
